Based out of Astoria, Oregon, Fred Devine became a maritime legend by conquering the "Graveyard of the Pacific" with his specialized company and his iconic vessel, the Salvage Chief. A master diver with a gift for engineering, Devine converted a WWII landing ship into a powerhouse of winches and anchors capable of pulling grounded ships off the treacherous sands of the Columbia River Bar. His presence in Astoria turned the city into a global center for salvage expertise, saving countless vessels from certain destruction and cementing his status as a local hero. Even after his passing in 1971, the legacy of his grit and innovation remains a cornerstone of Astoria’s rugged waterfront history, with the Salvage Chief itself remaining a beloved fixture of the local landscape.
